Flintlock is U.S. Africa Command's first and largest annual special operations exercise combining military and law enforcement to build the capabilities of African and international special operations forces. The exercise, which has been held since 2005, is conducted on the basis of mutual respect and collaboration to advance the common interests of regional stability. The host countries this year are Ghana and Ivory Coast, about 1300 soldiers from 30 countries are participating. Flintlock aims to build the capacity of key partner countries in the region to counter violent extremist groups, collaborate across borders and keep their people safe, while respecting human rights and building trust with civilian populations. The African countries participating this year are Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Cameroon, Chad, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Libya, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Togo, Morocco and Tunisia. Niamey, 16 aout 2023 (Lomé Actu) –Au moins 17 soldats nigériens ont été tués et 20 blessés dans le sud-ouest du Nigerdans une attaque de djihadistes hier près de la frontière entre le Niger et le Mali, a annoncé le ministère de la Défense à Niamey
Le Niger, comme le Mali et le Burkina Faso voisins, est en proie depuis des années à des violences attribuées à des islamistes armés. Les militaires qui ont pris le pouvoir dans le pays à la faveur d’un putsch fin juillet reprochent notamment au président renversé Mohamed Bazoum son incapacité à lutter contre cette insécurité.

Plusieurs pays ont appelé ce mardi 16 août à une résolution pacifique de la crise au Niger, à deux jours d’une réunion militaire ouest-africaine devant évoquer une possible intervention armée pour rétablir le président élu Mohamed Bazoum, renversé par un coup d’Etat il y a près de trois semaines.
